Patrick

“Mr. Patrick Miller, nice to meet you. I’m the head coach of the baseball team here at the University of Texas.” I shook his hand as he nodded at my teacher. We were in Texas on a college tour, but so far, I was being introduced to all of the coaches by my current coach, Coach Reed.

“We saw your highlights and would love to see you in action at one of our practices,” he added. I nodded, not knowing what to say, so Coach Reed stepped in.

“He’s definitely interested. Patrick here is a great listener and takes direction even better,” Coach Reed said.

“Those two qualities are the makings of a winner. Patrick, here’s my office number. You call me when you’re ready to be part of a dream team. Good day men,” the university coach said. We caught back up with the group and I saw Jonathan, Lucy’s neighbor, standing beside her. He was saying something privately to her and she pushed his shoulder and laughed. I walked over to them and put my arm around Lucy and pulled her closer to me.

“Baby, what did the coach say?” Lucy asked me.

“He gave me his office number,” I told her.

“That is great! Patrick, you pretty much have it made,” Jonathan said to me.

“Yeah,” I said, dismissing him and kissing Lucy right in his face. I saw the look on his face. He wanted my girl bad.

“Hey, hey, cut it out,” Ms. Taylor, our English teacher said.

“Just get married already,” said another one of our classmates.

“Hey Lucy, I’ll be over later today. Tell your dad I have the part he was looking for,” Jonathan said, looking cockily at me. I didn’t like that shit. Once he walked off, I looked down at Lucy.

“Baby, it’s not like that. We went to elementary school together and his dad and my dad were friends until his dad died,” she explained. I stayed silent because Lucy had a way of telling the truth when she felt pressured.

“His dad was a police officer. He was killed in a STING operation and they couldn’t afford their house anymore. They just recently moved back,” she continued.

I thought about some of the shit she said and it all made sense. I let her go before I spoke. “You and old boy used to date or something?” I asked her.

“Patrick, we were only twelve. It was before you ever spoke to me in class that day,” she said.

“So what, you broke up with him for me?” I asked. She was silent.

“If he moved without you knowing, then that means y’all didn’t break up, huh?” I asked.

“Patrick, we were never in love. It was more like friends,” she explained.

I looked back at Jonathan, who was talking to some girl while watching us. I knew he was going to be a bigger problem than I originally thought. The rest of the trip, Lucy was nervous because I was being distant. I knew in my heart she wouldn’t cheat on me, but how could I compete with someone she had history with.
